Job Description

To play a key role in ensuring that GEMS Wellington, Silicon Oasis offers, maintains, and develops an inclusive approach and experience for all ELL students. The specialist role will support English Language Development to improve proficiency and outcomes in students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

  • Implement programmes and materials to ensure ELL students are effectively to make rapid progress.
  • Support in class to improve the access and progress of ELL students.
  • Work with ELL Coordinator to maintain an up-to-date ELL register and use relevant data to analysis student progress.
  • Take part in regular Professional Development to keep up to date with relevant research and best practice.
  • To lead small groups of ELL pupils, both social and academic.
  • To use positive behaviour management strategies in line with the WSO behaviour policy.
  • Communicate effectively and sensitively with pupils to support their learning.
  • Supervise pupils at play/leisure breaks, at times of transition between lessons and activities, and on arrival to class and before departure.
  • Assist with general administration and supports classroom management, including creating learning materials. This may include photocopying, filing, labels, laminating, signs, backing and trimming work.
  • Support management of ELL department and learning spaces.
  • Support with organization of ELL initiatives such as Mini Interpreters, Mother Tongue Day etc.
  • Attendance at Team meeting as required.
  • Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school.
  • Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality, and attendance

Skills

  • Holds a minimum of High School certificate equivalent to Year 13/Grade 12 (A Level) as per KHDA requirement
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with pupils, parents and colleagues.
  • Time management and organisation skills.
  • Literacy and Numeracy skills.
  • ICT capability.
  • Knowledge of strategies which promote good behaviour and discipline.
  • Support ethos of the learning environment.
  • Caring and tolerant.
  • Ability to acquire further knowledge in order to contribute effectively and with confidence to classes in which involved.
  • Understanding of relevant specialist area (e.g. subject area, Key Stage) sufficient to pupils’ learning.
